Adding and Using Microsoft Passkeys

March 31, 2025

NOTE: Your computer must have Bluetooth enabled to use Passkeys, so it can verify your device is nearby. If your computer does not have Bluetooth, you'll need to log in with your username and password.

Overview

Microsoft Passkeys offer enhanced security by protecting against phishing and data breaches. They simplify the login process by allowing you to use biometrics (fingerprint/face) or a PIN instead of traditional passwords. This means you do not need to remember or manage complex passwords. Additionally, passkeys can sync across multiple devices, providing a seamless experience whether using your phone, tablet, or computer.

However, not all websites and apps support passkeys yet, so you may still need traditional passwords for some services. Since passkeys are stored on your device, losing your device could complicate access to your accounts unless you have backup methods in place.

Adding a Microsoft Passkey

A Microsoft Passkey can be added during the setup of your Microsoft Authenticator, or after.

If you have not already setup your Microsoft Authenticator, you will need to skip the first two steps.

Begin by selecting your UNOH account within the Microsoft Authenticator application.

Microsoft Authenticator Home Page

Choose the Create a passkey option.

Microsoft Authenticator Create Passkey

The next step to enabling Passkey usage on your device is to give Passkey permissions to Microsoft Authenticator.

This can be done by selecting the Settings option.

Passkey Setup Prompt

This will take you to your device settings where you can toggle the Authenticator permission on.

Once you have given the app permission, go back to Microsoft Authenticator and select Done twice.
