Virtual desktop technology allows UNOH to provide enhanced, flexible desktop delivery to students, faculty, and staff. A virtual desktop is a complete package, including the operating system (Windows) and apps, that is streamed to the end-user device. The device does not necessarily need to be a PC.
The University began deployment of its virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in 2023, beginning in the 100 Building. The rollout will continue into 2024 and 2025, with additional classrooms and common spaces outfitted with this technology.
UNOH uses the VMware Horizon product to deliver virtual desktops. VMware is an industry leader in virtualization technology with an extensive line of mature products. The University has been using other VMware products to deliver services to students, faculty, and staff for many years.
Traditional vs. Virtual Desktops
Traditional Desktop | Virtual Desktop |
Operating system (Windows) and apps are installed on each individual computer | Operating system and apps are preconfigured and streamed to the user |
Apps only available on the physical computer in the classroom | Apps available from nearly any device, including a PC, Mac, Laptop, iPad, Thin client, or smartphone. |
Apps limited to the classroom | Apps available to nearly any device with an Internet connection (UNOH credentials required) |
Energy savings of 75% over a traditional desktop |
Thin Clients in the Classroom
A thin client is simply a receiver, or a player of a virtual desktop. UNOH uses thin clients to allow virtual desktops to be delivered to students in the classroom. The thin client connects the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to allow the student to interact with the virtual desktop that is streamed to the device. These devices have no moving parts, and consume 75% less energy than their PC counterparts.
VMware Horizon on Personal Devices
UNOH uses the VMware Horizon product to deliver virtual desktops. VMware is an industry leader in virtualization technology with an extensive line of mature products. The University has been using other VMware products to deliver services to students, faculty, and staff for many years.
VMware Horizon will allow students and staff to access a UNOH desktop from almost any personal computer. This gives students and staff the ability to access material they would normally only be able to access on campus on their personal computer. To install VMware Horizon onto your personal computer you can follow the instructions linked below.
